Firn Labs

About

A small studio for modern software.

Firn Labs is a software studio operated under ITIFCO UG. We're a small team of two people, working on a handful of native projects we'd want to use ourselves.

What we believe

Four convictions, kept short.

Native > webview.

01

Software that runs on your machine should feel like it belongs there.

Open standards.

02

Your data is yours. We build on protocols you can run yourself.

Motion on purpose.

03

We ship features when we don't feel quite ready, not when the calendar says so.

In public, mostly.

04

Build logs, code, decisions — out where you can see them.

Why the name

Firn is the dense, granular snow between fresh powder and glacier ice — old enough to have settled, on its way to becoming something more solid.

It's the metaphor we keep coming back to for the way we are working: we don't wait for the snow to settle, we release before we feel ready, to ensure that the code becomes solid through the feedback we receive. The three peaks in our mark stand for the goals we want to achieve — not setteling for the smallest or the middle peak, we are going for the big ones. The smaller glacier-blue peak on the other hand, is the part that catches the eye, the way one good detail and a solid foundation makes a piece of software supportive.
